This type of painting was done by many great artists from Rembrandt to Ingres. 

If the technique is carried out to the extreme like Ingres,  a lot of glazing would take place. In my painting below I did no glazing.

I can see the shifting light changing in this one setting.
The warm light is farther left on the first image.
