Water Color Painting at Night Maui Artist Don Jusko

3-7-83 4:00 AM, Painting #251. Across from the last stop light in Lahaina, where the Chart House was. What was I doing up so late??

"7-27-88, Poli Poli State Park, 6,000', it's cold. I have a new halogen light inside my van above my head. To paint night scenes of course. This is fiberglass paper, made to the effect of Fabreano paper. I really enjoyed it." From writing on the back of the painting.

7-28-88, Poli Poli, notes written on the back: "It's been three years since I've been ready on the one night the full moon rises on the horizon at sunset."
That's the night when the full moon looks it's biggest. I saw it once at twilight and thought "I'll paint it tomorrow". I won't make that mistake again.

10-22-88, This was where I camped this night, 7,000 feet up from the warm coast line. This is Hosmer's Grove, a park on the way to the top at the 10,000 foot level. I spent a cold night up there and it snowed! The roads were blocked and I was the only man on the mountain. I was big on CB's at the time "The Traveling Artist" and invited Maui to a free beer party at the top :)

9-18-03, That's "Chuckie the Duck" flying along side the parasailing instructor. He takes her for a flight every evening about this time. Maui's great, Poli Poli's great. This is what watercolors are all about, "paint the bird before it flies away".
I know, evening isn't the same as night time, but it's close. These are the Indian yellow colors in their opaque form, this was before I made a transparent Indian yellow and before there was a commercial transparent Indian yellow.

I've just started this page of watercolors, I have 10 years of my work when this was my main painting medium. Night paintings are rare for me, they always have been.
