Burnt Umber

#3 of 5
36RCW#1.10 to #7.10, Translucent to Opaque

Burnt Umber is a natural pigment, opaque in it's mass state and translucent as an under-tone. Synthetic burnt umber is transparent to opaque.

Burnt Umber is dark Yellow, dark Orange or dark Red. Mix Burnt Umber with yellow's opposite color Ultramarine Blue or Red's opposite color Cyan to make a true dark neutral color that will tint to shades of neutral gray and black. Burnt umber is hydroscopic so it will always absorb water, be sure the finished painting is sealed well. Mold will happen quickly if you don't.

Make Brown

There are many combinations of pigment that will make the hue of brown. Besides it being a natural oxide it can also be a composite of unrelated pigments.
