The painting was done with a very limited palette, yellow ocher, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, thalo blue and titanium white. The cadmium red was used in the porcelain doll scarf, the thalo blue was in the background green wall. Burnt sienna and ultramarine will make a burnt umber hue and a very deep neutral dark.

2-16-05, First the chalk drawing to be wiped down with a feather to remove most of the chalk.

2-17-05, I made a batch of the wall background color and saved the remains in a covered jar for touch ups.

2-18-05, Yellow ocher was the second color down. I'm painting thinly and building up layers.

2-20-05, The darkest dark is the tea pot lid, the lightest light is the little doll under the pot.

2-21-05, early in the day, all the lines are removed. The only brushes I am using are the very stable round ferule, flat end hair #5 and #8 lettering brushes.

It's a pity that this style of brush isn't sold in art supply magazines anymore. In my opinion this is holding back artists from doing tight work.

All through the history of painting this was a most important brush. The hair is short and springy, it makes even lines and will get into a corner.

When Mr. Langnickel ( sometimes spelled Langnickle ) died the brush line was discontinued and it hasn't been seen since. I guess it's because the brush distributers are not artists, and artists don't know to demand them. I did find this site on the web, I'll probably carry them as they look like the best.

Start with the Haydn Series 200 Red Sable Brush
I'm ordering them today, 3-19-5. 5-1-5, they seem a little long and floppy, fine for sign painters. That's the way it goes, they are still worth while.

The bamboo window shade is finished and I'm working on the cups. By turning the painting upside down I found errors.

The white little porcelain doll is finished. The teapot is ready for the blue fired on color.

Notice the setup is directly over the painting, that's the way it should always be.

I had a lot of pressure to finish this painting today. I have to return to Maui to give a water color class. We are going to make our own water colors from dry pigment.

The final finish on this Tea Ceremony painting is made by Triangle Coating. It's a water based polyurethane with UV inhibiters applied with a 3" foam USA wooden handle brush.
