I think painting in the fog is a good time to use the Cadmium Red and Thalo Blue opposition for the cool, fast fading distance tints. And also the cool/warm darkest darks in the foreground. (new window)
These Real Color Wheel Oppositions darken beautifully added togather, like each it's matching 36 colors do.
Keep the Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber opposition, and the Magenta/Green opposition colors on hand of course, should you see the those colors, use 'em.
